The state fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of an explosion at Landus Coop in Jefferson, causing extensive damage to a concrete grain storage silo on the north side of the facility.
No injuries were reported.
The explosion occurred at 8 am. According to a nearby resident, flames could be seen 80 feet in the air. Emergency response was swift, with Greene County sheriff and Jefferson fire chief Jack Williams, and other emergency responders on scene within five minutes. Williams called for the Grand Junction and Scranton fire departments to assist, specifying the need was for hoses and manpower. Crews were on scene for most of the morning.
According to the Landus website, an initial investigation shows the explosion was caused by smoldering grain in a self-contained bin located next to the grain elevator.
The cooperative hired a salvage company specializing in extinguishing grain to safely remove the remaining grain from the bin.
